WAGNER IN MUNICH
Compassion, Mystery, and Redemption
With Parsifal, Richard Wagner created his final music drama: a profound meditation on suffering, compassion, and the possibility of redemption. First performed in Bayreuth in 1882, the work unfolds within the mystical world of the Holy Grail, where a wounded king awaits a stranger capable of understanding his pain.
At the centre of the drama stands Kundry, a mysterious figure caught between service and temptation, whose encounter with Parsifal becomes pivotal to his journey towards self-knowledge. In Munich, Elīna Garanča takes on this complex role, alongside Christian Gerhaher as Amfortas and Tareq Nazmi as Gurnemanz.
The Bayerische Staatsoper presents Pierre Audi’s production, with stage design by Georg Baselitz and Pablo Heras-Casado conducting the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and the Bayerischer Staatsopernchor.
Presented at the Nationaltheater, these performances offer an opportunity to experience one of Wagner’s most contemplative and musically expansive works in one of Europe’s great opera houses.
